COLUMBUS—Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) now offers basic notary services at most of its 23 locations. CML customers can speak with a staff member to make an appointment or they can schedule an appointment online to meet with a commissioned notary public on staff.

CML piloted this program at five of its locations in May 2024. Eight months later, the library now has 43 notaries on staff at 20 of its 23 locations with plans to expand it to all 23 locations within the next year.

“Public libraries are always evolving to meet the changing needs of their customers,” said CML Chief Customer Experience Officer Charlie Hansen. “Our customers have been asking us for this service, and so we explored it and have been working to implement it over the course of the last year.”

CML provided free notary services to more than 500 customers in 2024.

Notaries are available in person only during regular library hours. Appointment times vary by location and are subject to staff availability. Notary services are not available for more complex documents, such as real estate or mortgage closing documents, deeds, wills, trusts and powers of attorney, among others.

Columbus Metropolitan Library has served the people of Franklin County, Ohio since 1873. With its Main Library and 22 branches, CML is well known for signature services and programs like School Help, Reading Buddies, Summer Reading Challenge and Ready for Kindergarten. The library’s Strategic Plan supports the vision of “a thriving community where wisdom prevails,” which positions CML to respond to areas of urgent need: kids unprepared for kindergarten, third grade reading proficiency, high school graduation, college and career readiness and employment resources.
